Construction dust doesn't stay where the work happened. Fine particles travel through HVAC systems, settle inside cabinets, and coat surfaces in rooms that were never part of the renovation. A proper post-construction clean accounts for all of it — not just the room that got remodeled.
Safety Comes First
Before any cleaning starts, protective gear matters: an N95 or better dust mask, safety goggles, and gloves. Renovation dust — especially from drywall, sanding, or demolition — is fine enough to stay airborne and irritate lungs well after the crew has left.
Clean Top to Bottom, Every Time
Dust falls. That single fact drives the entire order of operations: ceilings and upper surfaces first, then walls and moldings, then furniture and fixtures, and floors dead last. Cleaning in the wrong order just means re-dirtying what you already finished.
What Gets Missed Most Often
- Moldings and cabinet interiors — dust settles into every corner and ledge, including inside cabinets that were closed during work
- HVAC vents and filters — vent covers should come off, get washed, and any exposed filter should be replaced; otherwise the system keeps recirculating dust long after cleanup
- Countertops and flat surfaces — dry-dusted first (wet wiping too early can smear fine dust into a film)
Why a HEPA Vacuum Matters
A standard vacuum can actually make renovation dust worse — its exhaust can kick fine particles back into the air instead of trapping them. A HEPA-filtered vacuum is built specifically to capture particles that small, which is why it's non-negotiable for post-construction work, not just a nice-to-have.
One Pass Isn't Enough
Fine dust keeps resettling for days after the heaviest cleaning is done.
